Harsha Bhogle’s column: Indian cricket team to benefit from Anil Kumble’s vision, Virat Kohli’s passion

Virat Kohli has begun channelizing his aggression and Anil Kumble will help him achieve that.

Two powerful personalities, visibly different but attitudinally similar, have been thrown together to control Indian cricket. It is not normally recommended practice because a team can, strictly, only belong to one person. But the two, separated by generations, are bound by intent. Even though he was only formally appointed so, late in his career, Anil Kumble was always seen as a leader and yet played as a soldier. And in spite of looking the rebel (his clothing brand is called Wrogn!), Virat Kohli is respectful of what has come before.

I was very fortunate to see Kumble throughout his career and not once did my admiration for him dim. He was always soft spoken and dignified, picked up dinner bills, returned calls and was happy to discuss cricket and enlighten others. I always thought he was an oak, tough, reliable and willing to stand up to the storm. Sourav Ganguly says that when the opposition was rampant and the conditions were demoralising, one bowler was always looking to catch his eye. Kumble always wanted to bowl and it is a lesson that he will impart to the team under him. You never concede.

Scratchy Patriots run into in-form Amazon Warriors

These aren't best of times for Faf du Plessis. Still with just one win from four games, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots have managed to stay on the third spot in the points table and a loss here would severely dent their chances going forward.

Du Plessis and his men take on Guyana Amazon Warriors in their next 2016 Caribbean Premier League clash at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. Amazon Warriors, the current table-toppers, have functioned like a well-oiled unit and are unbeaten so far in the three games they have played. To add to that, they defeated the Patriots in their opening clash by four wickets. Clearly, the onus is on the visitors to make things happen.

Patriots are coming off a demoralising loss against Barbados Tridents. There have been patchy performances with the bat and the bowling is too heavily dependent on Samuel Badree.

Eric Simmons, the coach, in his pre-match press conference, stressed on the fact that the team is close to firing on all cylinders. Impressed by the performance of Devon Thomas and Evin Lewis, Simmons tipped them to come good in the next clash. However, the think-tank will be well aware of the fact that they'll need a much-improved performance from the batting unit if they want to topple the Amazon Warriors. The biggest threat to the Patriots will be Sohail Tanvir, who is the highest wicket-taker, with eight wickets so far.

The Amazon Warriors have been ruthless in the tournament - getting better with every passing game. After winning their opening clash by four wickets, they trounced Trinbago Knight Riders by six wickets before taking the top-of-table clash against Jamaica Tallawahs by seven wickets. They walk into the contest as favorites but such things hardly matter once the game begins.

When: Guyana Amazon Warriors vs St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, Match 10, 1200PM local time.

Where: Providence Stadium in Guyana.

What they said:

"From the (warm-up) camp we were all about getting back home somewhere in the top two, and that's what we did, and to leave home (leg of matches) as the top team. I'm sure that if we can play the way that we're playing, or continue the way that we're playing, that we can end up going on from here. It's just up to us to stay positive, and that's what we've been doing so far, and once it continues I'm sure we'll stay on top." - Dwayne Smith on Amazon Warriors good run.

"I think that we're in good spirits. Obviously we would have preferred a win or two more under our belts, but that's not always the way it goes. We've played some good cricket, one or two slips have cost us obviously, but there's a lot of confidence in the squad's make-up and balance. We know the conditions here and we believe we have the squad to exploit them." - Simmons was upbeat even after his team has picked up three losses.

England vs Sri Lanka, Only T20I

SL 140 (20.0 Ovs)
ENG 144/2 (17.3 Ovs)

England won by 8 wkts

PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Jos Buttler

The End:

Eoin Morgan ended Sri Lanka's misery on the tour with a six over the deep mid-wicket region to help England win the only T20 International by eight wickets and 15 balls to spare. With this loss, Sri Lanka have remained winless against England on the tour.

Oh, that's a drop:
Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler have done well to consolidate England's chase and put them in a commanding position. It was further helped by Sri Lanka dropping a couple of catches. As of now the hosts are cruising comfortably.

No caution:
England batsmen seem to be in self-destruct mode. Chasing a relatively easy target, they are taking unnecessary risks in order to take the attack to the Sri Lankan batsmen. Jos Buttler, in specific, has been scratchy.

Early strike:
Sri Lanka have struck early as Jason Roy gets himself castled in an attempt to play a fancy scoop shot behind the wicket. He exposes his stumps and Angelo Mathews hits it.

AFG 283/4 (47.2 Ovs)  CRR: 5.98

No result

After the early hiccup of Noor Ali Zadran, Shahzad started off on a positive note. He came out all guns blazing but threw his wicket away playing a rash shot. Javed Ahmadi and Rahmat Shah steadied the innings with a 53-run stand for the third wicket. Once Ahmadi and captain Stanikzai departed in quick succession, the play was halted due to rain. However, it turned out to be a much needed break for Afghanistan. Najibullah Zadran and Rahmat Shah started upping the ante. Rahmat slammed a brilliant hundered while Najibullah struck a quickfire fifty. They provided the much needed impetus before the rain returned and eventually the play was called off. As for Scotland bowlers are concerned, Wheal and Sharif were the pick of the bowlers. That's all we have from this time. Do join us for the second ODI which starts on Wednesday.

England vs Sri Lanka, 5th ODI - Live Cricket Score

England won by 122 runs

Sigh! That's that from the ODI pyrotechnics. I remember Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton (during their comm. stint) stressing upon a point where Sri Lanka failed to capitalize on a few opportunites throughout the series. This certainly isn't a 202- all out pitch, "It's just that Sri Lanka are low on confidence" lamented Nass. There's a fine line between good and great. The good turn up while the great turn up and announce their arrival. England's exuberant show and Jason Roy's vast improvement as a cricketer are the apt justifications, if you ever needed one. Um, lets bring the curtains down and we hope to join you on Tuesday, the 5th of July - For the one-off T20I. Till then buh-bye from Raju Peethala, Akshay Maanay, Vineet Anantharaman, Ramakrishnan and Krishna. Enjoy the weekend - Keep rocking.

The champagnes are out and fizzing as England players pose for the cameras. Some of the England players kiss their respective medals while a few keep themselves busy in gulping the bottles down. Ah! Whattay sight. Newspapers splash tomorrow perhaps...

"It turned out to be good toss to lose. We played much better than any other game in the series. We adapted to the conditions well. Had I known about the pitch, I would have gone with two spinners. I think our pacers did well to hit good lengths. Given the ground, I think the bowlers did a great job to restrict Sri Lanka. The belief in the change room has been outstanding. Jason Roy has been batting exceptionally well. Except myself I think everyone has contributed to the team's success. I think we got better with the series. One off T20 is a good chance to rest a few guys and a good chance for a few guys to push their case strongly," an absolutely outspoken speech from Eoin Morgan

"We have been having the same problem in the last 5-6 weeks. We were poor with the ball and in the field. Bowlers quite didn't hit the straps, the batsmen didn't do well either. Running was very poor and we need to improve as a team and day-by-day we need to concentrate on getting better. Credit to English for playing exceptionally well. It was disappointing, unfortunately we could never recover from that (first) game. Going forward there are a lot of positives. The seniors obviously have a role to play in the team but the youngsters also need to put their hand up and make the most of the opportunities" mumbles a disappointed yet optimistic Mathews.

"I think just scoring 40s, 30s, getting myself out and on a couple of occasions pushing myself to score big. I put in a lot of hard work, lot of credit to the coaches for helping me out. We are doing that as a team (fielding). There are some areas where we are working on. I would like to score a lot of runs for Surrey and of course I want to play Test match cricket. That's the dream," an elated Jason Roy.

Undoubtedly, Jason Roy - Man of the Series

"I had a little bit of success against them. Nice to contribute to the team and great to win the series. Respect to Jason (Roy), he played fantastically throughout the series. We have put in some consistent performances and credit to the boys for playing exceptionally well. IPL experience is valuable I think, the more I play the more you learn from those experiences. Rashid bowled fantastically well again. Not focused too much on the future; taking it one day at a time. Whichever format it is, just try and give my best" a fantastically fantastic Buttler.

Jos Buttler - Man of the Match

For England: Jason Roy (who obviously will receive the Man of the Series I presume), David Willey, Adil Rashid, Jos Buttler and Liam Plunkett. Chris Woakes ain't bad either

Positives in the ODI series for SL: Dinesh Chandimal, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis

Dinesh Chandimal was the lone bright spot for the Lankans, as he has been throughout the series, notching up his fourth consecutive half-century to keep his side's hopes alive. But alas, with absolutely no support from the other end, it was a case of too little too late.

The familiar script unfolds itself all over again albeit in the reverse order, with the English batsmen coming out all guns blazing and then being subject to a submissive surrender from the Lankan batsmen. This tour for the visitors just keeps going further downhill. After being steamrolled in the Tests and then being blanked in the one-dayers, the players would be looking to hop onto the next flight to get as far as possible from what has been one of the poorest away tours for this side in years. The resurgent English, on the other hand, appear to have everything going for them at the moment. After setting a mammoth target, thanks largely to half-centuries courtesy Vince, Root and Buttler, the bowlers came out and pierced the Lankan balloon getting them to crumble meekly to yet another humiliating defeat.

Saha, lower-order brace up for batting challenges

Just quarter past the scheduled time (09.30 am IST) for India's practice, a line of eager cameramen positioned themselves in anticipation for the arrival of the players on the third day of the side's national preparatory camp in Bangalore. As the cricketers began to walk out of the National Cricket Academy building and onto the B Ground at the Chinnaswamy stadium, there was one visual that caught the attention. Umesh Yadav, one of the quick bowlers of the side, emerged from within the building with a thigh pad on. Right behind him, came Ishant Sharma, the leader of India's bowling attack, padded up to take early strike in the nets!

As Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane took turns for throwdowns from Sanjay Bangar, the batting coach for the upcoming tour of West Indies, and Raghu, India's designated throw-down specialist, Umesh and Ishant did the same in the adjacent nets. It was a peculiar sight for the handful of onlookers who had gathered to try and squeeze out an autograph and a selfie with some of the players.

For every textbook back foot punch from Rahane and a commanding cover drive from Virat Kohli, there was an audacious cut from Umesh and an optimistic sweep from Ishant, a shot he would oft-repeat in the 45-minute batting session that was also characterised by a few well-connected shots, some over-the-top slogs and a lot of swing-and-misses amidst a lot of discussions and shadow practice.

Soon enough, Mohammad Shami strolled out with his batting equipments in tow, adding to India's strategy of giving their tail a long batting session. Like Umesh and Ishant, Shami too faced HS Sharath, the Karnataka pacer, Stuart Binny, Amit Mishra and a couple of net bowlers. His stint was shorter, as he came on to bowl in the same nets to Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravichandran Ashwin.
By the time India's busy morning session came to a halt at noon, there was enough evidence from that net, to believe that the management expects the lower-order to add a lot of value to the team's batting when they tour West Indies this month.

Since MS Dhoni's retirement in December 2014, India have looked a touch vulnerable in the lower order. In his last year in whites, Dhoni was involved in as many as seven seventh-wicket partnerships in nine Tests, including two 50-plus stands with Ravichandran Ashwin and two with Ravindra Jadeja, that frustrated opponents to a good extent. Despite losing all the three series (In New Zealand, England and Australia) in which these partnerships were achieved, Dhoni put on a brave face on several occasions when the top-order caved in, thereby helping India's batting drag on for as long as possible.

Wriddhiman Saha, Dhoni's replacement behind the stumps and as the vital link between the top and lower-order, has a long way to go before he successfully fills the former captain's massive boots.

"To fill up Dhoni's boots isn't an easy task. He played for India for many years, and was a match-winner for India. I will try and reach my potential and help the team, with the bat in vital situations and by taking catches behind the stumps," Saha conceded in the press conference on Friday (July 1).

Despite playing a Test each in 2010 and 2012, Saha's moment of truth arrived in second innings of the Adelaide Test in 2014. The emotionally-stirring Test, played when the grief of the passing of Phillip Hughes was still very raw among his national teammates, had been turned into an absolute cliffhanger by Virat Kohli, the stand-in captain, and his ballsy determination to go after a target of 364. When Saha joined Kohli in the middle, India had raced to 277 for the loss of half their side. The target was down to less than 100 with over 25 overs to go. A partnership with Kohli would've surely led India to a memorable win on Australian soil. But that was not to be. Saha threw his wicket away while trying to slog against Nathan Lyon, exposing a frail lower-order that folded and let Australia eke out a narrow win.

In eight Tests since the Adelaide game, Saha has been part of just three fifty-plus stands, two of which came alongside Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The manner in which he can bat with the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and batsmen further down the order will signify his ability and acumen as a Test cricketer.

Saha's numbers so far flatter to deceive but he has only regularly featured in the Test side for a little over a year-and-a-half now. The upcoming season, thus, will be decisive in his progress. As the team gears up for the West Indies tour, Saha exudes confidence and reveals his keenness in batting with the tail, something that the board will be glad to hear.

"I feel good batting with the lower order because in that situation (if) the team makes crucial 40-50 runs, it is very helpful for the team. Even if every bowler contributes 15-20, the team can make a big score, so in that if I can also make a contribution, it will be very good for the team and myself."

With more than 15 Tests to come in the next 12 months, and India stressing on the need for their bowlers to sharpen their batting skills, Saha will have ample opportunity to walk the talk, and the tail will have similar chances of making such batting sessions count....
